One of the local hangar bums took these as I was returning from from 1+20 minute flight. Had a nice camera so the quality is good.

Great photos, and a nice landing, however I deduct a point for the 'No scarf ruling'...well done. 9/10.

Nice photos of a great landing Dick. Do you make it good that every time? Any info/photos regarding your cross-country flight?

Paul,
I'm based at Chandler Muni (CHD) and went to Coolidge (P08 for the fly-in breakfest. I got a late start and they were closing up shop by time I got there so I didn't get to eat. The bad thing about missing breakfast was the thought of a forced landing in the desert on the way back and only having enough body fat to survive for maybe 20-30 days. Total distance flown was about 75 miles round trip. I know thats what you call a local flight, but I'm still relearning how to use a chart that has all those colors printed on it. I mean I didn't have a VOR, GPS, FMS or anything. I was filed as a Mini-max/nothing; that why I flew 75 miles instead of 60. My camera has been missing for two weeks now and I can't find it anywhere. My next step is too take my 3 dogs down for x-rays to see which one ate it. As for the landing; it started as a wheel landing and after the 2nd bounce I said screw it and made a three pointer. So for landing points it was actually a 11; a 1, and then another 1 and finally the 10 which was down graded to a 9 because of the missing scarf. For anyone who cares, the Hirth 2704 is running well.

Very clever story Dick, I and all the rest of us are enjoying reading it. Looks like you fly out of a pretty congested airspace, Mode c required! I suppose you are immune to the radio/transponder regulations since you have no electrical system. Do you contact ALBUQUERQUE CENTER via phone for clearance? Looks like you have some 3000 foot mountains to watch out for, do you go over or around them enroute to P08? They should make for some good photography during the waning hours of sunset.

Paul,
CHD is a class "D" airport and though it lies under the PHX class "B" I don't need a X-ponder based on my no electrical system. I do use a hand held for ATC. It does get busy there. Lots of training and a/c based there. I just replaced my 16 year old Delcom 960 with a ICOM A-6 and that seems to be working ok for com. CHD is located on the south side of the PHX metroplex so I don't have far to go to get away from the conjested areas and out into the desert. I'm really limited on where I can go due conjested areas to the north and it's a long way around PHX. I've been dodging the mountains so far but I do want to get some picture up close and personnal. I'm Still looking for my camera and no it's not in the refrigerator. At my age I'm starting to wonder about myself! I can't blame the dogs for everything. If I buy a new camera the old one will show up as soon as I do. I wonder if I didn't open the box on the new camera if I can still trick the old camera into showing itself? Worth a try.

Dick, some fine pictures. Glad to hear the Hirth is going good. Be sure that with all the work You have done that camara isn't in the plane. maybe in the cowl, or some how slid to the back of the plane. Just a thought. I still love that cowl, the other one is ending up on a mini max that Eaa 330 built. they sold it to a guy in Glennville Ga. An My buddy Barney gave it to him for the plane. Barney was not going to use it. He bought a J3 Hipps and has rebulit it. Charlie

Times have changed. I was a radar air traffic controller at Williams AFB during the Vietnam war. We drove to Mesa, Scottsdale, and Tempe through Chandler. Chandler was not much more than an intersection with a traffic light and a few small buildings. Love that bird. Wish mine looked that good.

Charlie,
I had the camera at the house two weeks ago when I down loaded the pic's from the Copperstate fly-in. After that I don't have a clue what I did with it. I'm going to order for a new one tonight. Glad the cowling is going to a good home. My new one is all fiberglass made with flat panels except for the fiberglass nose bowl. I got the pic's you sent of the Hipps J-3 and Speizo (sp) two holer. I always like the looks of both of those. Thanks,
Dick

Bill,
There's still some areas of open fields but the're getting few and far between. Every time I drive by a field I study the rows, the crop and suitabilty for use as a forced landing area. When I find one I think is suitable, I study what it looks like from the air so I can hopefully recognize that one or another one just like it in case I need it some day. By the way, the old Willy AFB is alive a well just in civilian hands.

Dick good looking plane where did you hide the muffler was going to fly this morning but the winds are already gusting to 28. guess i will go to work instead. Steve Cooper

Steve,
There's no hiding that exhaust/muffler. Everything is hanging out in the breeze on the left side. The engine is inverted. In the 1st picture look under the "74" number. The wing blocks the exhaust in the 2nd picture. Gusting to 28 in the mountains where you fly could get a little scary. Too much for me.
Dick
PS. A better view

Dick, I looked at the pictures and said, "Who is that old fart?" When I realized who it was, I said, "Damn he's my age!". I wonder why I look so much younger? I miss your Copperstate flyin since I moved to the Austin area.
