Had a great time at the Halstead antique flyin this last sat and man was it well attended Steermans, Wacos, Champs, 3 Taylorcrafts, 3 Funks, 3 J3 cubs and lots of shiny cessnas from 140's up in all about 89 planes showed up in a combined effort to run the Huns out of Kansas. Brian, Terry, Lawernce Alley and myself represented the east fighting force. Left the Selby Aerodrome at a bit before 8 traveling under the 1000 foot limit of MidContinent airports landing area. Circling Wichita I picked up a J3 just north of Goddard and fell in behind him and above covering in case of attack.... a huge fog bank loomed ahead of us and the cub decided to go under it... so he dropped to what I later learned was about 400 ft while I for the first time climbed through it watching my instruments and GPS soon I had climbed out of it and was traveling North. The bank turned out to be only a few miles thick and I was soon past it... noticing that I didn't see the cub flew to the west and sure enough he was a couple thousand ft under me. We flew on to Halstead with little fan fare and no hun action. Landing, we were directed to line up with the other fighters that had landed before us even at our early arrival time we were the 54 and 55 planes to land they just kept coming. Soon it was heard over the loud speakers that a fokker and a spad were in hot combat over Halstead so about 20 of us took to the air in force.. the Steermans taking the lead and blowing smoke we tore to the town some 3 miles away. Seeing us coming in mass the Huns made a run for it high tailing it out of the area. Having felt pretty good about running them out of town with no bloodshed the town below decided to throw a parade for us. Being stout hearted men we formed a line and proceeded to fly down main st. in a Parade of planes. With much yelling and waving from the happy and saved citizens of Halstead we proceeded back to the local Aerodrome to reap the rewards given by the ladies for saving the city. Much food was eaten and lemonade drank as we told of our adventures a field. Since the fight was done within sight of the hangars all were highly entertained. Brian not being able to keep up with us real planes decided to fly an airshow of his own and did some low level runs of his own. Later in the day I flew back to Selby happy in the knowledge that once again I had helped save the day and there was no damage to my plane. The wing walkers were a pretty good idea at this flyin... sometimes my reputation and this board proceed me.
As some locals know this is an annual event and is done on Halstead old Settlers day so I guess the parade really wasn't because we did such a good job of running the huns off.... but still it is fun to fly with about 20 planes down the main street of a town... a 4 block parade doesn't take long at 80 mph. I am sure Brian took a lot of pictures and I will ...... borrow some from his webpage and post them when he puts them up.
