well the last few days we had reports that the huns were planning something big. well our spies got us advanced notice and we all have been flying a lot of sorties in defense and keep them from ever even getting off the ground. the other night i took off and flew a couple miles north to check in with some of our low level recon guys (AKA PPC flyers) there were 3 of them all set up and ready to go so i decided to demonstrate to them my newest weapon in the war. i came down to about 10 feet AGL, firewalled the throttle and flipped on the smoke. Big oops here, friendly fire is a b****!!! it was so dead calm and their field is lined with trees on both sides the smoke was trapped over their strip and was reported to me that visibility was still at only 10 feet 5 minutes later, i grounded our friendly forces. well one brave troop (the most experienced pilot) took off into the fog bank i created and helped to blow away some of the smoke. then another veteran pilot took off and it was still another 3 or 4 minutes before visability was good enough for the rookie to depart. well with this show of power no hun dare come close.
well tonight i took off and after a trip around the pattern i smoked the field in a display of power and also to keep invading huns from landing on our strip due to the zero visibility. after this i flew north and insured that our low and slow recon guys were on the job and then smoked their strip to protect it as well. since they had the low altitudes covered i decided to cover the high ground. i climbed up to 6100' MSL (our field elevation is 733MSL) so more then a mile AGL!!! after enjoying the view for a couple minutes and ensuring the airspace was clear i began my long decent back to earth once back down to about 1000' AGL i started to head back south and checked back in with the low level recon it had been about an hour and i could still see some of my smoke floating around their field. just then i saw a hun trying to sneek up on our guys and attack from above. my mighty merlin quickly climbed above and behind the hun fighter. i nosed over and pulled the trigger on my 50 cals only to hear a click and no boom. my ground crew forgot to load my ammo, never have a 5 year old as your weapons officer. so i used the only thing i had on board, smoke and lots of it!!!!!! i dove down straight in front of his nose and cranked up the smoke. he was blinded by the smoke and when he tried to dive away he made himself a smoking hole in the ground. i don't think the recon guys even knew what happened as they just waved as i flew by like the smoke was just a way of saying hello. a quick five minutes later i was in the pattern back at dalton the sun was setting and the battle was won. i was tired so not my best landing but just one bounce and i was on the ground and headed back to the hangar, ready to fight another day!!!!

Once you have tasted flight, you will forever walk the earth with your eyes turned skyward, for there you have been, and there you will always long to return
