Congratulations!!! That's a huge milestone!

Don't let the ink dry before starting instrument training - even if you don't go for the rating the training is well worth it.

Thunder,

Congrats on getting your PP ticket. I'll bet that check ride was not nearly as frightful as you had imagined. Find you a good pilot friend to fly with and you will learn a great deal from the "voice of experience".

yea I was wondering how the checkride went, I took the checkride to get my light sport, took about 1 hours, plus about 30 minute oral exam, I made a 98 on my written so he didn't ask me a lot of questions mostly about the sectional and airspace, a few regs and about the plane.   I was just wondering how it compared with yours as PPL?

Well done. I hope you have many happy flying hours ahead of you.
never surrender; never give-up
thunder669April 7, 2012, 7:12pm
Yeah it was nowhere near what i was expecting. After about 30-45 min of oral he said obvious that you know what you are talking about and anything you don't know you admit it and know exactly where to find the answer so no point in wasting anymore time here, let's go fly and we did. He was a great guy that did everything he could to keep it fun and easy going so he could actually judge your skills without all the nerves in the way so it was no problem, but i have heard of other examiners who are the exact opposite so alot depends on that

Congrats Thunder... Took me years from when I started training until I finally got my ticket. Life kept getting in the way... Then it all seemed so anti-climatic... But it really is a neat thing to have in your pocket!... Well done.
Why focus on proving how great you are, when you could focus on becoming better?...
thunder669April 9, 2012, 3:59am
it also took me almost 2 years from when i started training because of many life situations popping up and making me take breaks from training but it was in no way anti-climatic for me. to finally be able to take friends and family flying with me and share my passion with others is a dream come true and i can't wait till this summer and start flying young eagles for our local EAA chapter

Thunder - Sorry, I didn't mean to downplay your accomplishment at all. It really is a good feeling to have. I definitely enjoy it for same reasons you do. Again, congrats!

HOw bad was the medical?  I have a dot medical but have heard horrible stories about the flight medical, made me stay away from it.

Is that a lie?

thunder669April 21, 2012, 4:11am
didn't take it like that at all tony besides been told i have more enthusiam then most so it all good, lol. and dave if you have a dot then you would be just fine for a third class. it was nothing more then when i get my annual phyiscal from my normal doctor and i wear contacts and have bad knees and lower back from injuries in the military and still breezed through it. from what i have heard it is basically the same as your DOT or maybe even a little less for the third class you need for private, now for any of the higher levels i don't know

Thanks I was kind of curious about that, then why all the horror stories, or did they get a horrible AME?

lowflyerApril 22, 2012, 3:12am
I think they got some horrible AME's.  I had one that I spoke to at a meeting and when he started in about paperwork I would have to fill out for a prior small issue that was a non problem..........I ran.  I have had my second class medical and no problems getting it. I have to go this month to renew it but I think I will do my third class and if I have to get my second I will do so later.  Have flight review I have to do as well.
GarykApril 22, 2012, 3:34am
The reason the 3rd class medical should cease to exist is the inconsistent manner in which it is handled by Doctors. For example: a Doctor of Internal Medicine may dwell on a different set of medical facts than a Doctor specializing in another field. I had one by a Family practice physician that was a piece of cake but another by a Doctor who specialized in hearing issues. Two totally different experiences. Kudos to the EAA for trying to eliminate the 3rd class medical. 99% of my flying was solo or with one passenger so to me the new Sport license would seem to be adequate and doesn't have the aggravation of the 3rd class.

Glad for you and your family must be very proud of you also.

Finally got my ticket. (4-26-12) I was literally sick to my stomach anticipating my check ride. To make things worse the wind was 13 gusting to 24, not exactly perfect flying weather. But decided to press on anyway. After airborne I settled down and performed all the maneuvers within standards. Not near as bad as I anticipated.

And to think it all started with me purchasing a fixer-upper Himax, rebuilding and flying it. That led me to really become interested in taking formal flying lessons and pursue my PPL.
thunder669April 27, 2012, 9:17pm
congrats man, it's been a few weeks and i am still flying high from the feeling so don't expect it to go away anytime soon. given your first passenger ride yet? that is just as big of a high

So it takes almost a month to get your plastic in the mail? I've got my printed out piece of paper, but it's not the same when you pull it out and show someone. it doesn't look or feel official.
thunder669May 2, 2012, 5:46pm
pretty close, it was 3.5 weeks for mine, but i know exactly what you mean, feels much nicer having the real thing and not just the print out from the examiner.

I never thought I would have so much money in my pocket and not be able to spend a dime of it...................but it feels good to have it.
GarykMay 3, 2012, 1:58am
Now you can shoot for Instrument, Multi, Commercial and CFI ratings. Just something to separate you from all that loose cash in your pocket.  LOL  Congratulations again.....
