Cable Repair

Hi all, I haven't fallen off the edge of the earth, just been busy rebuilding my engine, honey-do's, and innumerable household projects both  new and repair. In  the mean time, I  added a cable repair tip to my website.  You might want  to check it out:  http://www.airbikeace.org/ This will also appear sometime this summer/fall  in an Australian magazine  called The Pacific Flyer.

I  have another one coming out in Powered  Sport Flying (available only through Barnes and  Nobel  Booksellers)  that describe a  fiberglass  fairing project on my Tiger Moth. Yes, I am still working  on that biplane, but very slowly.

I hope to be flying again sometime in July,  hope,  hope, hope.  This  engine rebuild is going very slowly too.

We have been trying to trade him to the huns for years.  We were hoping to get wine for him
The light at the end of the tunnel has been sold to China, if you need the light at the end of the tunnel please send 100 Yen.

If you guys would quit "whining" and help with the Hun Hunt, we wouldn't always be looking  over our shoulders.

well we thought we had been keeping the front here safe with a lot of low level recon from the ppc guys, me flying cover and man did we have a show of force at our dawn patrol sunday morning with 4 AT6 texans, 2 BT13s a heuy, a grumman widgeon, well over a hundred other aircraft from kit foxes to cessnas and pipers. and just incase things did go bad we had two Bell 47 M*A*S*H style helicopters and 4 modern life flight choppers ready to evacuate any casualities. well throught out the morning the only smoke was from the AT6 and of course my minimax doing flyovers in a show of strength and fun was had by all. little did we know that those damn huns were so near by just waiting to pick one of us off once we were seperated from the rest of the group. After the mission of eating stacks of pancakes and having many laughs a good friend of mine flying a beautiful flag themed Phantom took off and circled around for one more fly over before flying off to the south west for home. he only made it about 5 miles away when the huns managed to shoot him down by taking out his engine. luckily they underestimated his skill and he simply glided down and landed nice and easy in someones backyard without putting one scratch on him or his plane
Once you have tasted flight, you will forever walk the earth with your eyes turned skyward, for there you have been, and there you will always long to return

OK Thunder, glad to hear that you and  the boys are doing your part  in Michigan's lower peninsula.  Whatever Huns you take out means that fewer will migrate our way.  Or,  damn, on second thought.  Maybe they are so scared of you and your crew that they are scrambling to get out of  there and will head west.

Well, keep harrassing them and get that downed pilot back onto friendly territory.  I am sure that a few bottles of fine French wine and massive attention by red headed nurses will bring  him around so he can fight another day.

Correct, the magazine  name  is Powered Sport Flying, it  is right down our alley  for the type of flying us little guys do.  It only recently early this year began being carried by Barnes and Nobel Booksellers.  Not all stores carry it,  best to call and ask the one nearest you before driving to it.  What is  the  electronic link  to this magazine Gary? I would think that one would need to subscribe in order to read the content.  This magazine is aimed more toward us than Kitplanes magazine. My Hun Encounter article is in the April issue 2012. It is a four-pager starting on page 23.

The magazine having my cable repair shop tip is  on page 25 of the  Australian magazine, Pacific Flyer.  I have never  seen it on a newstand here.  Most likely, subscription only.  However, Arthur from Australia can pick  it up  at his newstands.  Lucky guy.  This is another great magazine directed at our type of  flying.

Paul,

The link is : psfmagazine.com       It is basically an ad soliciting a subscription but there is some information on the page and some good links.

Great tip Paul! I have a couple of those nasty little finger-finders myself. How about just wrapping some of the new self-adhesive silicone tape around the fix instead of the JB?
fiebichpvJuly 4, 2012, 3:17am
Hi Bill, I am not familiar with the silicone tape.  What type  of store would  one find  it?

I use the heat shrink tubes, seems to work great..

Paul, you can find the silicone tape at places like Aircraft Spruce. Mine is red. You wrap it around something and it sticks to itself - makes a permanent bond. Is not removable unless you cut it off. Good for many things, from electrical insulation to just bundling hoses or lines. Unfortunately, heat shrink tubing only works if you think to slide segments onto your line BEFORE you close it up.

Thanks for the response Bill.  Yes, heat shrink tubing was my first choice,  but after 14 years most of  it rotted off.  Since the cables (not  the one shown for  illustration) were still on the plane, my solution was the wire whipping and  JB weld.  However, the silicone tape would work well in this  situation too.  Thanks for the heads-up.
