I wasn't in max - but tonight would have been a perfect night to be...
Clear Skies, no wind, no turbulence, and the Idaho/Washington Palouse in all its glory... Got about 5 hours of flying in this weekend - Sadly, the first of 2013. But will not be the last. N27KL is getting closer, and now I also have N7771E at the ready... Gonna be a good summer...
Why focus on proving how great you are, when you could focus on becoming better?...

What amazes me is, the mountains with all the pretty green on them that look like they could be golf courses but they are not.

Believe it or not, most of this is agriculture - a lot of wheat, barley, lentils, chick peas, etc. (not the mountains/canyons of course) The growing seasons make for fabulous and changing patchwork views from the sky. This weekend was my first flight over Palouse in seven years; but as soon as I was airborne, I was reminded of why I enjoyed flying here so much...
Now for the better news... my "GoPro" video camera arrived today... so I hope to be able to obtain some decent video in the weeks and months ahead... especially once N27KL is airborne again...

I think GoPro needs to start paying Ricardo a little something under the table. He's got us all buying cameras now! Hopefully in a couple weeks things will slow down enough for me to climb in a plane and do a little bit of video with mine.
Really nice pictures Tony!

Kenny - you are right... I had looked at GoPro's several times; but never pulled the trigger until I saw Ricardo's flight videos. Very inspirational. Now I am conjuring up several uses for it... Looking forward to your flying Oklahoma videos!

Yea, but in reality its probably a pretty small proportion of what most of us spend on flying. Clouds broke in time for me to get 30min in tonight in my 150 so I grabbed the GoPro and strapped it to my head - a lousy idea because the angle is to high, and all the movement. But it did give me sense of the quality of the video - and I am pleased - even though I bought only the "White" version of the Hero 3. The quality is more than adequate for my current purposes. (learning how to use and learning how to video edit). I hope to work on a couple of mounts this weekend, then try again. Your videos really are inspirational Ricardo. Thanks again.

Just playing with my GoPro... Haven't yet figured out a mounting system, or video editing, or much else... But, this gives a little flavor of flight of two evenings ago...

Nice video Tony,
Highest setting was 360, you should set your camera at 720 dpi at least, to get high resolution.
Download time on U tube for 5 a five miunute video takes several hours with the internet connection I have. I leave my PC on all night long and get the video ready in the morning.
If you have high speed connection it will take much less. It all depends what kind of deal you have with your internet operator.

Hey thanks Ricardo. I recorded at hi-def; but then made adjustments when converting, so it did not come out so good. I do have a reasonably high speed connection, at least I pay for it ... I'll get he hang of this... I took some more video this weekend, but I get the prop artifact in all of them, so it detracts from enjoyment... Time consuming little hobby... but eventually will be kinda cool... thanks again for your inspiration!

RICARDO AND REDBIRD, I have a hero 3 white and a nexus 7 tablet for remote control.. I have trouble with the previvew freezing after taking a picture or not coming on at all. I have the gopro free app and also another one that cost $2.05... The later one is the one I prefer but they both act the same way so I assume that it could be the camera????
I've tried 3 times to video a landing and twice it only took one picture even though it was set on video. and the last time I tried, it made a video of the worst landing that I've made in over 20 years, which I will not share..
Onthe web, lI've discovered that there are several hero 3 coustomeres that have freeze up problems and I'm also led to believe that if you format the sd card, you remove the software update.. therefore I delete the pictures and don't format anymore..
Is it the camera, the tablet or the operator..

Harless: I'm not an expert on this, but let me ask my nephew, the photographer, if he knows about thr freezing issue, he and his buddies seems to know a bit about this.
My camera is the Black edition. I bought that option because of the remote control included.
The SD card is just for picture's storage, I have two of them 36 and 18 GB models, so there's no software involved that I know off. IMHO, It could be a card problem but most likely is on the remote control compatibility. Does your camera work normally when manually operated?
I also did an awfull landing into the sun but to my surprise it shows quite smooth in the camera because of its location .
Tony: I've noticed that If the camera doesn't point straight into the prop it will minimize the funny rotation image.
Harless GreearMay 27, 2013, 5:20pm
Ricardo, The camera works great mannually and it will connect to the tablet with both of the apps I have, (one at a time).. I can remotely turn the camera on and off and sometimes the preview won't come on and some times it will... Sometimes when I take a picture with the preview on, the preview will freeze and only show the last picture I took and will not go away until I turn the camera off..
sometimes it works flawlessly

Harless, for what you say I think the tablet is playing games with the camera. Find out which way works best , maybe is a procedure that you have to follow.
The remote control on mine doesn't have a preview image, only a small window same as the camera's. A couple of times it has made two separate films instead of a single one without touching anything, not perfect either.
To get a good picture, I just stop the video at the right time, get a copy and presto!
Here's a sample of my nephew taking pictures.

Hi Harless,
Well, I've only been playing with my Hero 3 - White for a week, so I am still an newbie... but I have not had problems with freeze up. Granted, I have not yet attempted to install the tablet app, although that is soon on my list of things to experiment with. My camera seems to work flawlessly so far. My problems are "pilot error" . I need to determine a good mount location. In the cockpit, out the windshield is lousy because of the prop artifact. Was thinking of in the landing light bay, but that will require removing the light shield/cover/leading edge every time, so not likely. Probably will mount on strut or hang down from wing. I've got some opportunity for some great scenic flights around here, and more within 2- 3 hours (Mt. Hood, Mt. Ranier, Mt. St. Helens, Snake River Canyon, etc...) I just have to develop some skills... Of course, the real reason is so I can video flying max around Palouse, but that still appears a few weeks away (I keep finding little squawks I want to fix while the plane is in the shop - wings off). Soon...
Didn't really answer or help you much. Ironically, I was looking at Nexus 7 table yesterday, for explicit purpose of linking up to GoPro... hmmm?..
Keep us posted as to your progress. Sorry about the frustration factor...

I have mine mounted on the himax just outbiar of the right strut on the bottom of the wing with a safety wire atound the strut..
I have two apps on the tablet for the camera, I think I will uninstall one and see if it makes any difference..

Thanks for posting Harless. Inspirational to me for several reasons - (1) I've been contemplating mounting my GoPro on my 150 strut, (2) my runways are 6-24 ... (3) just yesterday I was thinking I hope the folks at my field don't mind if I land my max on the infield grass, and (4) every time I see video of/from another max flying I get myself out to the shop and make a little progress on N27KL...
Oh, not to mention - that was a beautiful landing!... camera didn't even bump a little... very, very nice!

I have an A084 with a 1/1.66 belt drive PSRU.. GSC 66" adjustable prop set at 14.9 degrees

That A084 sure has a nice sound to it!
I'm working on the $$ and pondering which plane I should get or build, and the mini/hi max is high on my single-seat list should I decide to go that way. I think I'd feel a bit more comfortable behind an A084 or VW than a 2-stroke, particularly considering the terrain around here (just a bit north of you). I know many people have no problems with a 2-stroke but I'm not convinced yet. Might feel different if all the ground around here were not stacked up

I few up to your country several years ago when I was running a 2 cycle.. They had a fly-in/camp-out at Robert Newlan field.. I've also been to Ona a couple times..
HARLESS in Va.
srbellJune 3, 2013, 3:25am
Harless - I would consider that quite an adventurous trip for a 2-cycle considering the terrain! I'd probably have stayed within gliding distance of Rt 23 just in case
Our EAA chapter used to meet at Newlon - nice grass field right by the Ohio river. And Ona is pretty much just over the hill from Newlon. I live a little west of there across the river from KHTW. There is a field about 30 miles NE of here called Leon (W07) where they fly mostly ultralights. There are several mini/high-maxes based there, along with a lot of other neat stuff like Challengers, Fishers, etc. So far that's the only place I've seen any maxes around here. If you're ever back up this way give me a shout.
