October 8 I flew an early patrol from Liberty Municipal (T78 ) to Hawthorne Field in Kountze, TX. My purpose was to clear the sky of Huns so the East Texas Flyers could carry out our Young Eagles event.
Although the Huns held me back and the 30 min. trip took an hour, I was successful and they (I did not give any rides) gave 65 Young Eagle rides, plus at least 1 kid that was only 5 yr. old. There were also about a million aunts, uncles, parents and grand parents that rode with their respective kids, but they were not counted. Well, maybe not a million, but there must have been thousands and thousands. O.K. Maybe there were only a few hundred. The Kitfox, Cessna 170, Cessna 172 and J3 were busy from 8 AM till 1 PM, stopping only to fill or to empty tanks.
The trip east took so much longer than planned that I was about to turn around and head home when I saw what I thought was probably the airport. I really need to create a better seat for the Bike. Of all things, I hit the target dead center in spite of the strong wind.
On the return trip an Albatross surprised me from out of the sun and he managed to shoot out my sensitive altimeter. i was able to take him out, but the gun camera failed and I have no video of that. Perhaps next time.
