National Biplane Fly-In

Airplanes with more than one set of wings always caught my attention. What better place to see many vintage planes in one place than the National Biplane Fly-in held June 1, 2019 in Junction City, Kansas.

Fourteen biplanes (and one monoplane modified as such so it could be placed on the biplane row) showed up this year, the last one for this event. Several planes flew formation.

The hangar and ramp was filled with families enjoying the day, kids rode in an airplane "train", flight simulators thrilled older kids, a Zenith 700 was in the process of being built by the EAA chapter 1364 and food vendors filled our tummies and cooled our throats.

My wife and I drove the 120 miles from Derby to Freeman Field in Junction City, KS.  Half of that trip was on HWY 77; a designated Kansas Scenic Highway Route through the Flint Hills.

Following the biplane event, we visited the Swedish town of Lindsborg. While there we toured the Red Barn Art Studio then had a snack in the Courtyard Cafe. Our day started at 7:00 am and we returned tired, sunburned and satisfied at 6:00 that evening. It was a great day for both my wife and I.

And a couple more photos, well, I tried but somehow I can't post the last three.

An interesting sidelight, about 15 years or more ago I posted photos of my first attendance at the National Biplane Fly-In located in Bartlesville, OK. Arthur Withy was so enthralled with the photos that he requested that I send the entire batch to him. That was when I had dial-up, man that took a long time. Do you recall that Arthur? Perhaps some of those planes were at this year's event located in Kansas.

This is likely the last year that the event will be hosted under the banner of the National Biplane Fly-in in Junction City. It may go to another city next year.

Nice tribute to Harold Krier, his plane was recently repainted and is hangared a few door down from where my AirBike is. Harold also holds a place of honor in the Kansas Aviation Museum's Hall of Fame which recognizes Kansas people who have made significant contributions to aviation. Next chance I get, I will photograph his recognition photo and text.

Paul. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the math is 900 mm divided by 25.4 (mm to an inch)= 35.43 inches.

Thanks, I didn't catch the 900 mm wingspan text in Arthur's post. I should read more carefully.

That's OK Paul. I do it all the time. In my case it may have something to do with the number 74?

yes its small...and weighs just 700 grams...or 1.5 lbs  cheers Arthur
