I was poking about on the interwebs, looking at the Pietenpol Aircamper a while ago and ran across a document that listed all of the engines people have used to power their Piets.
http://www.flysquirrel.net/piets/engine/Pietengines.pdfBeing able to use a wide variety of engines is one of the thing I like about the Piets and that got me thinking... how many engines have been used to Power a Max?
I did some basic internet research and came up with the following.
Known to have been used (or intended to be used)
2si 460
Citroën AM2
Citroën 2CV
Continental 4A084
Cuyuna 430
DAF B-85
Fortex 4t single Cylinder
Fuji 340
Geo MEtro
Hirth 2702
Hirth F-23
Kawasaki 340
Kawasaki 440
Mosler
Rotax 277
Rotax 377
Rotax 447
Rotax 503
Simonini
Suzuki 530
Trabant
Verner Scarlett 3
VW

I knew a guy who used to fly a Hi-Max with a 4A084 generator engine.

Thank-you Cy V. I knew about at least one Max with that engine and still forgot to add it to the list.

Was there more than one Max built with the EA81? I was pretty sure the Subaru-powered Max (and its pilot) came to a unfortunate end.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CHIxg1Xj3DQ&t=66sI am quite interested in the VTWs. I figure the Hirth is only going to be my engine until it does the two-stroke thing and eats itself. Once that happens, it'll probably be easier and less expensive to use a VTW.
The Hirth 2702, with gear box, exhaust, and starter comes in at 105 lb 5 oz (I would assume the Rotax 447 is about the same - maybe less since it is higher-revving). I think 105# is doable in a 35hp VTW. It would certainly make parts more available (the 2702 is no longer supported by Hirth - fortunately it shares a lot of parts with the F-23).

My himax uses a Brazilian Fortex 4t. This engine is a improved industrial engine with 430cc.
It puts out around 35hp: 85kg of static thrust.

I was planning on putting a 503 into my 91 (UK 1600R) but a Hirth F23 just fell into my hands! 10lbs lighter, 1000 hr TBO and less than 10l per hr (apparently). This won't be happening all that quick, but I'll post pics as and when.
The first challenge will be the mods to the engine bay. Mine has a sloping firewall, for the flush engine installation. The F23, being a boxer is quite shallow, heightwise, and shorter than a Rotax but it does have a belt reduction drive that sits high, while the exhaust run (2 into 1) needs to run central, under the fuselage. Ponder that one folks, all suggestions welcome. Pics to follow.

Has there ever been a Polini Thor 303 been fitted to an Airbike?
